Notes From The Richardson – Central Trail South Meeting

Central Trail South Plans

Last night, the City of Richardson had a public input meeting over the planned southern extension of the Central Trail which runs along the DART Rail Red Line. Representatives from the city as well as consultants from Newman Jackson Bieberstein and Freese and Nichols were there to explain the first public draft of this plan. Here are some brief notes from that meeting.

First let’s talk location. The extension of the trail will run along the DART Rail from Arapaho Road at Greenville, all the way to Buckingham Road (approximately 1.9 miles). This will be a continuation of the Central Trail that already runs from Arapaho Road to Renner Road and will eventually be part of the larger, Dallas plan to have a connecting network of trails within several neighboring cities. The city already has an existing agreement with DART to run the trail from Arapaho to Main Street and is now negotiating the remaining distance.

We won’t give you much information about the trail itself, since they are still in the preliminary planning stages. An updated, more detailed version will be available early next year. Currently, the plan is to have a 10 foot wide multi-use trail that continues the same aesthetic of the existing portion of the trail. Beyond the hurtles of having to negotiate these trails cross major cross streets, the city is also having to deal with drainage and other infrastructure issues. When completed, the plan is to have multiple access points for users as well as emergency vehicles.

Here is the tentative schedule of this project:
– Now- April 2011: Continued studies and design
– May 2011: Second public meeting to discuss the updates to the design
– Summer 2011: Bidding
– Fall 2011 – Spring 2012: Construction
– Summer 2012: Completion

As a side note, the city will eventually extend this trail further south, beyond Buckingham, and connect with the Cottonwood and White Rock Trails.

    Ramble…Joggers are all about distance. A jogger knows exactly how far every stop sign, school or water fountain is from their house. I never used the Richardson jog trails because I didn’t know how much mileage was added by the meandering the city uses with it’s trails. I don’t know why I’m so concerned about the meandering nor do I know why the city likes to use meandering so much, and the cutesy pave stones, on the trails. I like getting places in the shortest distance…that just me. The curvy trails just give the image that the city wants the trails to appear like something other than serious travel routes.
    Striping was bought up…the planners I assume should not have to be told the advantages of striping. Thank goodness someone was in the audience that gave several good points about striping…ramble cease.

    Rod, keep in mind that most of the population doesn’t know what a MUP is. Of the x% that does, most see it as recreation or a property value improvement. Just to shed some light on this: Next time you talk to a Parks & Rec person (Such as Roger Scott), ask them the # of complaints they get per week on the APPEARANCE of the trails, with corresponding “drop in my property value” comments. You want to know where most of the political push really comes from on MUPs? Real-estate developers wanting to increase the value of their developments with one silver bullet project. So feel free to team up with the developers, but beware their motivations are not the same as yours!

      The motivation may not be the same, but the end result benefits most. As for directly effecting property value, I’d really like to see the official documentation that supports those claims. If it’s a proven fact, I see it as a real shame.

      Appearance is a big issue that can only be addressed by budget. Unfortunately we don’t have a “Friends of Richardson Trails” (similar to Preston Ridge, Katy and Santa Fe trails) group to collect funding for proper maintenance. Perhaps, as the trail system gets complete, somebody will step up and get organized about this.

        If you look at the “Friends of XX Trails”, I think you might recognize a few developers in the mix. If the “Friends of XX Trails” have open books, you might note a substantial donation from developers.

        I think you will find if the developers get interested in the Richardson trails, you will quickly have “Friends of the Richardson Trails.” Anyone want to hazard a guess where the Spring Creek Nature Preserve land came from, one of the crown jewels of Richardson trails?

          I’m a bit confused. Are you for or against having developers as trail sponsors? The tone of your comments make it seem like you have issue with this.

          Personally, if it adds to the greater good of the infrastructure, I don’t have a problem with corporate support — especially if it leads to a better, maintained system of multi-use trails.

            dickdavid,
            I’m all for making political alliances, especially when it’s someone as powerful as the land/real-estate developers. They have amazing pull with the infrastructure decision makers in City Hall. That said, I’m against giving carte-blanche to them to make all the type/style decisions on that infrastructure, especially bicycling. It’s a cautionary tale I’m spinning, not a wave-off. And the answer to Spring Creek Nature Trail/Preserve is Hunt Petroleum Land Development Corporation…

              Gotcha. And agree.

              We did discover that this meeting was less about input than some of the Dallas trail and bike meetings. With the East Dallas Veloway, we were given Sharpies and asked to mark up their plans. The Dallas Bike Plan gave us a website for input.

              Some issues about trail width and signage were met with concerns about the budget and continuity with the existing system.

              Hopefully some of those issues will be taken into consideration before May.
