More Renner Road Underpass Progress

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on August 14, 2011

It’s been a couple of weeks since we’ve checked on the progress of the Renner Road trail underpass. We were quite surprised to see so much progress in such a short amount of time. Now that the retaining wall is going up, we’re starting to get a better idea of how this trail is going to look.

Spring Creek Trail – Central and Renner Road Underpass Updates

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on June 11, 2011

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve been on the Spring Creek Trail, so we thought we would share some updates.

Central Underpass (south of Renner Road)
Let’s start with the – almost complete – Central Expressway (US75) underpass, the one located just south of Renner Road. The last time we checked, all of the cement was poured except the small bit that connected it to the existing trail on the west side. We got an email on May 28th from BFR friend, Dennis, informing us that it was finally poured. Here’s a shot of that:

West Side Connection To Existing Trail.

Some of the other improvements to this portion of the trail are new guard rails and painted retaining walls. These are the types of details that will make our trail system a nice place to travel – safe and visually pleasing. We’re glad the city has taken the steps to make these routes more than just utility.

Renner Road Underpass
The third and last holdout to the completion of the Spring Creek Trail underpass project is the section under Renner Road. This passage will be necessary to access the other Central Underpass, just north of Renner Road. Although behind schedule, quite a bit of progress has been made in the past couple of months. Now it looks like they’ve got a good start on a massive retaining wall.

BFR friend Howard sent us a link from Bike Friendly North Dallas. This Friday, there will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of the Cottonwood Trail. If you weren’t aware, the Cottonwood Trail provides us a safe riding route into Dallas.

From their Facebook event page:

On Friday, May 20th at 10:30am there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completion of the Cottonwood Trail at the DART Forest Lane transit station. If you can, arrive on on your bike! Riders should show up for media shots on the trail at around 10AM, and to perhaps stay after the press conference for shots of people getting on the train to “go to work” (May 20th is National Bike to Work Day). We are planning on having the cyclists ride up to the trailhead from the southeast and stop in front of the ribbon that will be strung across the trail, and listen to the speeches while standing with their bikes. Please spread the word!

DATE: Friday, May 20, 2011
TIME: 10 am
LOCATION: DART Forest Lane Station

The Collins Street Bridge

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by Adam on May 17, 2011

The Collins Street Bridge is a popular way for cyclists to cross Central Expressway, partly because it has a relatively low amount of auto traffic compared to Spring Valley, Belt Line, Arapaho, Campbell, and Renner (Richardson Traffic Count Map).  However, it is not perfect.  The biggest problem is that many motorists tend to drive well above the speed limit when crossing the bridge and, as with other roads that cross Central Expressway, the sun in the morning and evening can be blinding (this is believed to be a factor in the death of Anthony Mungioloi on Arapaho Road in 2009).

For the last few months, since mid- to late-March, the outside lanes of the bridge have been closed as the City has been making some repairs.  I cross this bridge on a daily basis by bike or by car (by car more often than I’d like to admit) and I haven’t noticed any negative impacts to traffic.  In fact, I would wager that traffic flow has actually improved.  Motorists seem to have slowed down (though are still able to travel at the speed limit) while cyclists have been able to ride in the “closed” outside lane, getting out of the flow of traffic.

There have been many discussions in the past (and quite recently) about improving the Collins Street Bridge for bicycle / pedestrian use.  The Richardson Parks, Recreation, & Transportation Trail-Way Master Plan shows the Collins Street Bridge as accommodating a “Potential Bicycle Lane” and a “Future Multi-Use Trail.”  Funding for the provision of sidewalks and a trail along this bridge has also been discussed by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (bottom of the last page of this table), but has not yet been funded.

I think that the current construction and subsequent closure of two lanes proves that the Collin Street Bridge does not need to have four lanes for cars.  It appears to function just as well, if not better, with two vehicular lanes.  In fact, I think that the City should not re-open those outside lanes when the repair work on the bridge is completed.  Instead, I believe they should be striped as buffered bike lanes in order to provide a safe crossing of Central Expressway.  The City has been very proactive in restriping some 4-lane roads to have two travel lanes for cars and two bike/parking lanes.  However, it is very important that any bike lanes added to Collins Street (either on the bridge or off) be either buffered bike lanes or 5-6′ wide traditional bike lanes.  The reason for this is that simply redesignating the outside lane for bikes will not preclude motorists from driving in that lane.

With construction nearing an end, the Collins Street Bridge will once again have four lanes for cars and none specifically for bikes.  As the recent construction has shown us, this bridge can operate effectively with only two vehicular lanes.  Let’s take this opportunity now that motorists have become used to having only two lanes and make this bridge a safe crossing for cyclists.

Updates To The Central Expressway and Renner Road Underpasses

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on May 9, 2011

A bunch has happened since our last report on the almost completion of the first Central Expressway underpass , just south of Renner Road.

View From THe East Side

It now appears that the second Central underpass, just north of Renner Road, has been poured as well. That portion of the Richardson trail – from Alma Road (at the PGB Tollway), running under Central Expressway, then around to Renner Road – is complete.

Coming Out On The West Side

The underpass at Renner Road – connecting this new trail to the existing Spring Creek Trail – is all that is left. As of a few weeks ago, it still looked like there was plenty of work that needed to be done. This weekend, we discovered that quite a bit of progress has happened and that underpass is well on it’s way towards completion.

Glenville Trail Officially Open

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on April 29, 2011

New Duck Creek Bridge

Dallas Morning News editor, Bruce Tomaso, has reported that Richardson’s Glenville Trail is officially open. This is the trail that runs from Bowser Road, past Glenville, Mark Twain and Huffines Parks, and connects with Duck Creek Trail.

As you may already know, the trail has been open for months. However, as of the ribbon cutting and dedication yesterday, it is now official.

Click here to read Bruce’s article.

Here is a rough map of the new trail (in red and orange):

Oncor Transforms Rights-Of-Way In Richardson

Posted in Bike Change, Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on April 28, 2011

Riding with my daughter

Several folks have been sending us information about Oncor and their efforts to improve north Texas cities through the creation of hike and bike trails through their transmission rights-of-way. As reported through Pegasus News, the Oncor Texas Trails SM program will produce trails that “will help create pathways that will be integral parts of the communities Oncor serves.”

What does that mean for Richardson since we already have hike and bike trails on Oncor rights-of-way throughout town?  Here’s a bit from the Oncor press release:

Oncor has engaged la terra studio, inc., a Dallas-based landscape architectural firm, to assist with developing the design templates for the Oncor Texas Trails projects. In addition, la terra studio will assist with work on the inaugural Oncor Texas Trails project, a hike and bike trail in Richardson. In the coming months, Oncor will work with the City of Richardson to design and complete the landscaping on a portion of Owen’s Trail, an existing trail on a section of Oncor’s transmission right-of-way. As part of the planning, Oncor will work with the City of Richardson to determine how Oncor employees will be able to volunteer their time to be part of this project.

“The Richardson Trail will be the first of many trails that Oncor and its employees will work on to help create a destination for our customers to gather with their friends and family, “said Jackson.

“Oncor has always been an important partner in our community, and its Oncor Texas Trails program will be a very welcome enhancement to our city and our trail system,” said Richardson Mayor Gary Slagel. “We have done a lot of work recently in partnering with local companies and volunteers to create the type of environmental improvements the Oncor Texas Trails program will bring, and we are especially excited to see these improvements focus on the highly used paths which many of our residents enjoy on a daily basis.”

Click here to read the entire press release.

On a personal level, this is great news for me since the Owen’s Trail runs through my neighborhood. I’m also hoping more folks will see these trails as destinations to gather – and not just pass through (and hopefully clean up after their dogs).

Trail Under Central – Serious Progress

Posted in Bike Change, Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on April 17, 2011

Forms down

Looks like the forms are up on the southern underpass (just south of Renner Road). It usually doesn’t take them long to pour the slab once it’s at this point. That doesn’t mean the trail will be open, yet. There is a bunch of finishing work that needs to be done before it will be open for riders. We’ll keep you posted.

Not Much Longer

I didn’t get a chance to check the northern underpass (just north of Renner Road) – but until the Renner Road underpass is complete, that section is far from useful.

Spring Creek Trail: North Of Renner Road – A Progress Report

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on April 2, 2011

Do you remember when Bob reported about this trail over a year ago? Back then it was just an open field and a plan to extend the Spring Creek Trail from the Renner Road at Central Expressway rest stop to Alma Road at the PGB Tollway. We’re happy to report that, over a year later, the trail is mostly – and we stress mostly – complete. Unfortunately, two key portions that will connect it to the Spring Creek Trail are far from complete. Both the passages under Renner Road and Central Expressway still have a long way to go.

Like with the central underpass, just south of Renner, contractors didn’t quite make the goal of February 2011 completion. Considering how bad some of last winter’s snow storms were, the setbacks are understandable.

That didn’t stop us from taking a spin to investigate the progress. Check out some of the shots from the upcoming trail (Click on the map above to see these pics in context).

End Of The Trail At Alma And PGB Tollway

Some folks have questioned the purpose of this trail. Although it will provide a safe passage under Central Expressway, it really doesn’t provide much of a connection between east and west Richardson. Once it connects to Alma Road, it just stops. Well, according to the Richardson Bicycle-Pedestrian  Trailways Plan, it will eventually continue along the PGB Tollway as well as the planned Cottenbelt Trail.

We’d like to see Dallas and Plano provide connections to both north and south Preston Ridge Trail. Fingers crossed.
