Richardson’s Point-Of-View On Different Types of Bicycle Users

Posted in Advocacy, Bike Education, City Stuff by dickdavid on October 4, 2010

With all the new trails and bike lanes in Richardson, (which we love) one might think that the city is trying to get cyclists off the road. That’s not true. One of the things that impressed us about the City of Richardson is their open point-of-view towards bicycle users. Instead of focusing on one specific type, they’ve taken into account that not all riders are the same.

Here is what is on the Richardson web site:

Types of Bicycle Users
There are several types of bicycle users and it is understood that some avid bicyclists do not like bike lanes.  The City’s goal in providing an overall Bicycle Route Plan is to accommodate all types of users. Some recreational users may prefer to use trails in the City’s Parks. Vehicular bicyclists may prefer to commute on arterial streets and do not want their “right” to occupy any travel lane jeopardized by having bike lanes.  The City will also be implementing “Share the Road” type signs on Renner Road where hundreds of cyclists travel many evenings and weekends despite the higher speeds and traffic volumes.  On collector roadways and residential streets we may simply provide a Bike Route sign with or without a dedicated lane.

Bicyclist’s Rights
The Texas Transportation Code states that “A person operating a bicycle has the rights and duties applicable to a driver operating a vehicle”.  To summarize the legal code: bicycles have the right to ride on public roadways because they are deemed a legitimate transportation vehicle by legislature. The City does not have the authority to restrict bicycles from local roadways, but TxDOT may restrict them from certain limited access highways.  Below are a few links to the Texas Transportation Code that deals with bicycle operations.

In order to provide a safe environment for bicyclists, the City of Richardson is in the process of implementing a long range plan to provide bicycle facilities and to designate preferred bicycle routes on lower-volume, lower-speed collector roadways.  Even though the City will not be encouraging bicyclists to ride on major arterial thoroughfares, we will be providing “Share the Road” signs at strategic locations to inform motorists that bicycles have the legal right to occupy the roadway.

There has been a dramatic increase in bicycle activity in the past few years, including a larger number of bikers who commute to work.  Several other Cities including Dallas, Plano, and Frisco are also enhancing their bicycle trails and on-street routes with new signage.  The City anticipates the trend in bicycle usage to increase in the future and will endeavor to provide as safe of an operating environment as possible. This is why we believe their bike plan (pdf) is one of the best in the DFW area. Combine that with some of the efforts that are happening in Dallas, and you can see a great future for cycling in DFW.

More Trail Progress

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on August 21, 2010

It’s amazing what could happen in a week. They had the forms set up last weekend for the addition to the trail at Renner Road and Central. This week we have about 70-80 yards of hike and bike trail, leading us closer to the pass under Central. Check back and we’ll keep you posted with more progress as it happens.

Last Weekend

Today

More to come...

On a side note, I met a really nice lady on the bike trails today. Jill was getting back on the bike for the first time in years. I told her about BFR and she seemed excited about the idea of a group that is more about riding for fun or utility over sport. Seems, like with most of us, the intimidation of the sport cycling culture has kept her off the bike. We hope to see more riders, like Jill, rediscover the enjoyment of riding their bikes – at their own pace.

Trail Construction Moving Forward Nicely

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes, City Stuff by dickdavid on June 13, 2010

If you are following along as we track the construction of the newest hike and bike trails in Richardson, we’ve got some new pics for you. If you haven’t been following along with our coverage of Spring Creek Park, you can click on these links to catch up:

Under Construction-Two Bike Trails Under Central Expressway

The paths and retaining walls are coming along nicely. Unfortunately, with all that’s involved with construction along the creeks, the underpasses don’t appear to be very far along. However, I’m sure there’s more finished than what is visible.

Enjoy:

New Retaining Wall (shot facing south along the east side of Central)

More Retaining Wall (Shot facing north along the east side of Central)

Still not much progress under Central Expressway

Not much progress under Renner Road either

Green Richardson

Posted in City Stuff by dickdavid on May 16, 2010

We just wanted to point out a couple of cool things that we’ve been seeing around town.

Of course, we all know about the wild flowers that come in every spring. This year they haven’t been very hearty, but they’re still a nice treat on a Sunday morning ride.

We’ve also noticed a nice little initiative from the city and a few corporate sponsors. Several different road medians and greenbelts have been given a nice little tree upgrade through a program called Tree The Town.

More Trail Construction Pics

As we’ve reported earlier, Richardson is putting some nice trails under Central (US75) Expressway. What we haven’t shown you yet are the trails leading to these routes. On my ride today, I was able to check out and shoot some pics of the new construction.

Here is the view of the construction about 100 feet south of the southeast corner of Renner and Central. The point-of-view is facing south. This new trail leads off of the Spring Creek Trail (right after the last bridge) and heads south towards the underpass.

This  is the last stretch of the Spring Creek Trail before it gets to the rest station at the southeast corner of Renner and Central. The point-of-view is facing south. This shows the new branch (to the left) which leads to a trail under Renner. That trail leads to the other Central Expressway underpass that’s located just north of Renner.

Note the bridge in the background and the construction for the new trail (seen above).

Heading east off of the new branch (see above). The point-of-view is facing east. Here the trail ends and the construction begins for the trail under Renner Road. Again, this trail will lead to the northern passage under Central Expressway. I’m hoping this trail will lead to the Bush DART station as well.

ONE MORE THING:

While riding along the UTD trail on Campbell, I noticed that the trees were being removed for transplant. I’m curious to why these are being moved and what will be happening to this part of the university. I Googled it, but got nothing. IF you know, please let us know.

UPDATE about UTD: BFR friend, Brad M, shot us an email with some more information about changes happening at UTD. He writes:

I do not know specifically where the trees are being moved, however I do know there is an entirely new entrance being constructed and the circulation into campus will totally change.  You can see this on the mast plan on the UTD website.  There is some type of landscape element being graded where you see the land scraped behind the trees.  I am sure the trees are being re-organized in another pattern shown on the plan.

Click here for more details. It will be interesting to see the new hedgerow along Campbell Road, as well as a larger entrance to the university.

Cottonwood Trail Dedication – Take The Morning Off June 3

Posted in Bike Trails and Routes by dickdavid on May 5, 2010

Our good friends over at Biking in Dallas have just released some news about the Cottonwood Trail Esplanade Dedication on June 3rd. Jump over to their site to see some nice maps and a cool video running the route from this side of the High Five.

This is truly exciting news for trail cyclists in Richardson. Not needing to ride all the way past Meandering Way (almost Hillcrest) to pass under LBJ (635), we will now have a shorter route to White Rock Lake and Dallas with this new connection. With the Cottonwood Trail, it’s now just a jump down Waterview and Maham.

As for the dedication, we’re going to make an attempt at getting the morning off to join the Biking In Dallas guys, show our support and witness the event. Who’s wants to join us?
