Bike Friendly Richardson

Recap Of Our Black Friday Ride – Number 3

Posted in BFR Misc, Bicycle Events by dickdavid on November 25, 2011

Today was our 3rd annual Black Friday Ride. Sixteen folks made the choice to avoid the shopping malls and discount stores to do a casual ride around Richardson. It ended up being a great afternoon for riding.

Starting at the Shops at Eastside, the ride was a 10 mile loop around Richardson. The loop included a wide sampling of the many back roads, side streets and multi-purpose trails that Richardson has to offer.

At the end of the ride, several of us enjoyed some tasty food and beverages from the Twist Root Burger Company.

We want to thank all the folks who took the time to make it out for the ride. We will continue to refine and develop this ride so that it will be even more fun in the future.

Here are some pics. Click here to see the set.

Black Friday Ride #3

It’s that time of year again. It’s the time to AVOID all the big crowds at the shopping mall, work off that Thanksgiving dinner and have a fun ride around town.

You are invited to attend Bike Friendly Richardson‘s third annual Black Friday Ride. Started three years ago as the inaugural ride that launched Bike Friendly Richardson, the Black Friday Ride gives folks an alternative way to kick off the holiday season. This is a casual paced ride that will explore many of the different route options available to Richardson cyclists. We will ride on back-roads, side-streets, multi-purpose trails and available bike lanes.

Come on out to the Shops at Eastside, enjoy a tasty lunch at Chiloso, Russo’s Italian Kitchen, Urban Eatz or Panera Bread, then meet us at the fountain around 1:00 pm. The route will be around 10 miles and goes through Spring Creek Park, where you can enjoy the colors of fall. We’ll end the ride back at the Shops at Eastside, where you can enjoy some tasty food or grab a cold one at Twisted Root Burgers.

It was a perfect day to ride. The temperature stayed in the mid 50s, the sun was shining and the wind was somewhat minimal. Twenty-one cyclists ranging in all skill levels, wearing everything from denim to lycra took part in the second Black Friday Ride. We had riders from all over DFW – including Richardson, Dallas, Garland, Denton and Arlington. Some folks enjoyed Fuzzy’s Taco before the ride and some folks stayed after to enjoy a snack and some cold beer. We really enjoyed seeing everybody and thank you for coming out.

Black Friday Ride No. 2

Tomorrow is looking to be a nice day for the Black Friday Ride. It’ll be sunny and cool so you probably won’t even break a sweat.

As a special treat, we’re working with Tripledub Images to help us capture the face of the Richardson (and Dallas) bike community. At one of our stops, Wendy will be taking individual pics of anybody who wants a photo with their bike.

For those of you who want to know the route in advance, here is a map of the ride. As promised, we will be experiencing all of the different types of routes available for Richardson cyclists: back roads, trails and bike lanes.

If you are on Facebook, let us know you are coming. I hope to see you at Fuzzy Taco Shop (561 West Campbell Road), tomorrow at 3:30.

Black Friday Ride No. 2

We had so much fun last year that we thought we’d do it again. Bike Friendly Richardson presents Black Friday Ride Number 2.

There are 30 days of holiday shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why venture out and deal with the crowds on the busiest retail day of the year? Why mess with busy parking lots, long lines and people fighting over the last of the Sing-A-Ma-Jigs? Instead, take the afternoon off and have a nice bike ride in Richardson.

We’ll meet up at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Campbell, and do a casual lap through town. The route will let you experience different parts of the Richardson Bike Plan, including neighborhood streets, hike and bike trails and some of the new bike lanes. Check back for more details and route map.

Date: Friday, November 26, 2010

The Black Friday Ride – Recap

Posted in Bicycle Events by dickdavid on November 28, 2009

It was decided that a casual ride around town was in order for the proper launch Bike Friendly Richardson.

Although the official launch of BFR isn’t until December 1, we thought we should capitalize on the closest holiday. Since Thanksgiving is a time for family, we settled for the next best thing, Black Friday. We could have a fun ride, launch BFR and avoid the crowds at the mall.

This particular Black Friday was an amazing day for a ride. The weather started off cool, but ended up being perfect. As planned, about 25-30 riders showed up at the fountain at Santa’s Village in front of the Richardson Civic Center. It was an eclectic group of riders ranging from Richardson locals, a few folks from Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, a few more from Dallas and other parts of the Metroplex and one surprise rider from the Richardson City Hall. Dave Carter, Asst. Director of Development Services, Transportation and Traffic, took this opportunity to meet casual riders and get their perspective of riding around town.

Once everybody showed up, we started rolling at a pretty steady pace. The route that we ended up going was actually the reverse of the original plan. It was brought to my attention that the new direction was actually easier for any newer riders. The only problem with the reverse loop is that it brought us to the rest stop a bit earlier in the ride. I figured since this was a casual ride anyway, that an early break would be fine. A little less that 4 miles into the ride, we ended up at the Starbucks at Coit and Campbell.

The group hung out for a bit, fueled up on caffeine while they enjoyed the day. Some additional folks joined the group, while a few others had to break off because of other plans. When we were finished with our drinks, we started the remainder of the ride.

The group rolled towards south Richardson, then eventually back east towards out starting point. The pace remained steady as members of the group kept me appraised to the state of the folks who were bringing up the rear. The great thing about the group it that everybody pitched in to keep the group together and safe.

Traffic was light, and with the exception of a little climb towards the end, the route was pretty level. In the end I wanted the group to see how easy it is to get across Richardson – especially when you take the back roads.

When we got to back to Santa’s Village, folks hung out for pics and to visit just a bit longer. The general opinion was that it was a good 9.2 mile ride. For me, it was a great ride – not the route, but rather the company. I thank all the great riders who made it out to the inaugural ride of Bike Friendly Richardson.

Below are some pics from the ride.
